In this post, I review the best smart curtains and rods—to help you pick the best choice for the windows in your home.

Without further ado, here are my top picks for the best smart curtains and rods:

Brighten Your Day, With Smart Curtains!

Now imagine, you’re settling down on the couch after a long workday, and you decide to watch your favorite movie. There is still daylight outside. Unfortunately, your window is open, and the glare from the setting sun is nailing your TV screen.

smart-curtains-and-rods-6959131Normally, you’d have to get up and fumble with those maddening drawstrings, before you struggle to get back into your comfortable spot.

Well, friends, have I got some good news for you. It’s smart technology to the rescue!

With my top picks best smart curtains and rods, you can pull out your smartphone or even use Alexa or Google and have them close themselves! Some smart curtains can be configured to automatically open in the morning when you wake up or close at a certain time at night.

These great gadgets are also equipped with child safety and home security or simply to automate another part of your busy life. They great addition to any smart home!

Pretty illuminating right?

Important Things to Think About

There are a couple of important factors to consider when you’re shopping for a smart curtain controller. To help guide you to your perfect curtain-match, I’m going to break them down.

Sizing Curtains to Fit

If you are setting up any one of these best smart curtains and rods with a new installation, the single most important thing to do is make sure you size it right. The Carpenter’s Golden Rule holds true! Measure twice, cut once. Restoration Hardware has a nice sizing guide that is packed with tips to help you get it right.

You can check out their guide here.

There are also some great tips for choosing the right fabric, window hardware, and more.

Smart Home Compatibility

If you already have existing smart home products (or if you’re obsessed with Alexa, like me!) then you want to make sure that your curtains play nicely with your ecosystem of choice. Some major ones include Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple’s Siri, and Samsung Smartthings.

Luckily, many of the products here do function with these systems, but they’re a few that are designed to be used exclusively with remotes controls or an app on your smartphone.

Level of DIY

There is a varying level of DIY required in the installation for the best smart curtains and rods, so it’s best to be mindful of the kind of work you’re expecting to invest in this purchase. Some of the curtains track and motor kits have different options for size, so you can make sure it’ll fit exactly where you need it to.

Others, however, require that you to cut them down to the proper size. Also, some of the curtains simply require more tools and time to install and put together.

If DIY is your thing, then perhaps some of the more involved curtain tracks are perfect for you. If you are looking for less work, however, then perhaps the motor kits or the Switchbot are a better fit for you.  More on this below.

Batteries vs Hard Wiring

The last factor here when comparing the best smart curtains and rods is a simpler one! The smart curtains here are all powered one of three ways: batteries (usually rechargeable), hard wiring, or a wall plug.

The rechargeable batteries are the easiest to deal with, as long as you have the opportunity to charge them occasionally. Hardwiring the curtains requires a bit of DIY, again.

Plugging the curtains into the wall is probably the easiest, but make sure you check that you have an outlet nearby, or an extension cord ready. Nothing is more annoying than putting a lot of effort into setting a device up, just to realize you have to go back to the store for an extension cord!

I will go into more detail about each of these products as well as present additional options below.

#1 – Quoya Smart Curtains System

412k7poaijl-_sl500_-3375325

The first contender on my list of best smart curtains and rods is the Quoya Smart Curtain System. While this may be a lesser-known brand than some of my other picks.  Quoya is a strong choice based on my thorough review and dozens of positive customer reviews that I read across the web. It has a variety of options for size, open modes (such as left, right, or from the center), and ways to control it. It is compatible with Alexa, Google Home, and Siri as well as an app and via a simple remote control that ships with the product.

This ensures you have plenty of control over how your smart curtain functions. Unfortunately, the motor does need to be plugged into an outlet, which may be a problem if you don’t have one nearby.

Pros

  • Compatible with Alexa and Google voice commands
  • Highly rated
  • Multiple size options
  • Automatic Stop
  • Timer Function
  • Hidden motor

Cons

  • Requires an outlet
  • Earlier models had confusing instructions causing some customers to cut the belt short. It looks like this has been resolved, though.
  • .

Zemismart has a nice video that details the installation process:

#2 – Rollerhouse DIY Electric Motor KIT

The Rollerhouse DIY Motor Kit is an internal option, placed inside the curtain rod. The Rollerhouse is one of those smart devices designed for ease of use. You can control it using the smartphone app, as well as Alexa for voice control.

No need to search the couch cushions for the remote with these curtains! The downside is that this motor needs to be plugged in, which may be inconvenient.

Pros:

  • Compatible with Alexa
  • Affordable
  • Easy to configure
  • Simple instructions
  • Durable materials

Cons:

  • Needs to be plugged in or hard-wired
  • Remote sold separately
  • At least one customer complained of noise

Where To Buy

You can get the Rollerhouse budget DIY smart curtains and blinds over at Amazon here.

#3 – SimpleSmart Curtain Tracks

This company’s name pretty much nails it. Can’t go wrong selling yourself with a name like “SimpleSmart,” can you? Although, with the plethora of options and functions, I don’t know If I’d consider this curtain track ‘simple.’

It functions with smartphones, tablets, Alexa, and Google. Multiple options for sizes and for how the curtain opens. The design is simple, with no cords or wires, so it’s easily hidden. It can also automatically configure some settings if you aren’t tech-savvy yourself.

Although the clips to the curtain may not work with every type of drape and window coverings, this is a very good choice in a motorized curtain otherwise.

Pros

  • Multiple size options
  • Compatible with Alexa and Google
  • You can also operate the curtains manually
  • Easy installation

Cons

  • Timer sold separately
  • Not compatible with Apple Homekit
  • Not compatible with all drapes

Where to Buy

You can get your fill of Simplesmart curtain tracks in a number of sizes over here at Amazon.

#4 – METechs Remote Control Curtain Tracks

This is not as fancy looking as some of the other options on my list of best smart curtains and rods, the METechs Curtain motorized track requires a bit more construction than some of the other options, but nothing you can’t complete with just a screwdriver.

Although this is another motor that needs to be plugged in, they have all of the good features to make up for it, including compatibility with Alexa, different closing/opening options, and an automatic stop function for when the curtain is fully open or closed. This is a durable and effective choice if it’s worth needing to be wired and a bit more work installing.

Pros

  • Compatible with Alexa and Google voice assistants
  • You can also operate the curtains manually
  • Strong aluminum material
  • Some DIY required

Cons

  • Needs to be plugged in or hard wired
  • At least one customer had trouble with the motor stopping properly

Where To Get It

You can pick up the MeTechs smart curtain tracks over at Amazon here.

#5 – AOK Motor Electric Motor Kit

The next contender on my list of best smart curtains and rods is this AOK Electric Motor Kit. The standard AOK Motor Kit is another motor that is placed inside a roller rod. This is a simple, affordable option with some great but limited smart features.

It can even be paired with Amazon Alexa, and it has a timer function for having the curtains open or close automatically. Nothing fancy, but a simple and easy-to-use motor kit. You might even say it is AOK :).

Pros

  • Compatible with Alexa
  • Timer function
  • Easy installation
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Needs to be plugged in.
  • A couple of customers complained about damaged or missing remotes.

Where To Buy It

You can pick up this system over at Amazon here.

#6 – MySmartBlinds Solar-Powered Blinds

If you think powering your window treatments via solar power sounds like a good idea, and you want smart control over your annoying dumb old blinds, check out MySmartBlinds. In addition to Alexa, this highly rated product will let you control your blinds with Google Assistant or its intuitive smart app. Built-in temperature sensors automate the closing and opening of the blinds via a smart motor based on the temperature in your home.

You can also set daily and weekly schedules, so you never have to worry about opening and closing your blinds manually again. Best of all? They are solar. So there is no plugging-in required, and you can save money on your electric bill. And you can remind yourself that you’re helping the planet whenever you open your blinds.

Tech with Brett has a nice video review of MySmartBlinds out on YouTube. I will include it below.

Pros

  • Compatible with Alexa and Google.
  • Timer function for daily and weekly schedules.
  • This is the best option for a solar-powered solution to contrl blinds.
  • Huge install base with lots of fans.
  • The mobile app is very well designed.

Cons

  • At least one customer complained of a lack of clear installation instructions but there are plenty of videos online.

Where To Buy It

You can purchase MySmartblinds over at this link at Amazon.com.

# 7 – American Homesupplier Smart Curtain Rod

Coming in at number seven on my list of the best smart curtains and rods is the American Homesupplier Smart Curtain Rod. This system is designed for larger windows with more heavy-duty material, and it offers 13 feet of the curtain rod. It requires more installation than some of the others, and some customers have complained that the instructions aren’t as clear as they’d like them to be.

However, if you’re more comfortable with the installation aspect, it is a reliable, durable option. It functions with Alexa, Google, and smartphones, so it’ll fit in great with any smart home products you already have set up.

Pros

  • Durable, heavy-duty material
  • Compatible with Alexa and Google
  • You can also operate the curtains manually
  • Quiet

Cons

  • More expensive
  • Some customers complained of unclear installation instructions

Where To Buy It

You can scoop up the American Homesupplier smart curtains over at Amazon here.

#8 – Yoolax Motorized Blackout Curtain

I saved one of the more premium products on my list of best smart curtains, second to last! Another top pick for the best smart curtains and rods is the Youlax Smart Curtain Track. And that’s not just because Yoolax sounds like something out of a Doctor Seuss storybook.

If you don’t mind the price, this turnkey solution combines all of the features of the standard motors with the actual curtains. No wiring, so the motor is easy to hide. Usable with Alexa, Google, smartphones, or even a wall switch—you will feel like a rockstar with this curtain and track!

Pros

  • A customizable and complete solution.
  • Many different size options.
  • Numerous colors from which to choose.
  • Durable aluminum frame.
  • Compatible with Alexa and Google.
  • Super quiet.
  • You can also operate the curtains manually.
  • Timer Function.

Cons

  • Custom solution is a bit more expensive.
  • There is some DIY involved.

Where To Buy It

You can check the latest price of the Yoolaxx smart curtain track over at Amazon.

#9 – Rollerhouse Electric Motor Kit

Next on my list of nine best smart curtains and rods is the Rollerhouse Motor Kit. This motor actually hides inside the curtain rod, but unless you are handy, I wouldn’t suggest going with this product.

Rollerhouse doesn’t have as many features as some of the others here, and it isn’t compatible with Alexa (yet). The seller is clearly international, and some have complained that the documentation is very hard to follow. However, others who ARE handy and installed these have raved about both this product and customer support. Check out the reviews over at Amazon.

There are also some helpful customer videos out on YouTube that can assist you with the installation. Neil Barrientos has published one such video:

Pros

  • Super affordable ideal choice for a low-budget DIY project.
  • Rechargeable battery.
  • Durable material.
  • Suitable for many locations.

Cons

  • Some customers have stated it requires some DIY and adjustment
  • Not as many extra features
  • Roller rod sold separately

Where To Get It

Bonus Idea! Switchbot Smart Curtains

Last on my list of best smart curtains and rods is the Switchbot, which is a bit different from the rest of the options so far. It’s not exactly a smart curtain rod by itself, but rather it’s a little robot friend that attaches to any curtain rod. It’s incredibly easy to use, without any installation or DIY at all.

It can’t really be hidden as well as the other motors, but if you don’t mind the look, or want to feel more like a sci-fi ship captain with a robot curtain assistant, it’s perfect.

Here is the company’s ad for the Switchbot:

Pros

  • Can place on most curtains
  • Compatible with Alexa, Google Home, Siri, and IFTTT
  • Long rechargeable battery
  • Light Sensor
  • No power outlet required

Cons

  • Needs to be attached to the curtain
  • Hard to hide

Where To Buy It

You can pick up the Switchbot Smart Curtain runner here at Amazon.
