It’s Ring vs August vs Eufy in an epic best Alexa doorbells showdown! Ding-dong!

Let’s open up the door to this review. But first, entertain me as I take a little trip down memory lane.

A Modern Day Peephole

ring vs august vs eufyI remember when I was a youngster visiting my Nana’s apartment. My grandparents lived in this high-rise building with many other elderly folks. Nana’s apartment had two standout features that really impressed me when I was a kid.

First was the balcony. I think she lived on the 8th floor. And the view of the even-then [circa 1975] Boston skyline was impressive.

The View from Nana’s Apartment

The second feature that impressed me was the little “peephole” in the apartment door. You put your eyeball up to it, and you could see a magnified view of who was on the other side.

I thought it was the coolest thing to see Mom and Dad on the other side of that door when they came to pick my little sister and me up from Nana’s.

Today, you can get a much more high-tech version of that peephole. It’s called a smart doorbell.

In this article, I review the three best Alexa doorbells [one works with Google Assistant too].  I’ll compare them side by side, provide mini-reviews of each product, review the pros and cons, and also provide a detailed specification table.

What Can the Best Alexa Doorbells Do?

Like at Grandma’s, a smart doorbell will let you see who is on the other side of your door, sure. But you can do it from anywhere using your phone, tablet, or computer [or even on TV if you have FireTV].

They will also let you do cool things like:

  • Take a video when motion is detected
  • Send you an alert when someone is approaching your door
  • Let you view your doorstep from your smartphone, PC, or tablet
  • Filter out animals and passing cars
  • Retrieve video clips stored in the Cloud for later viewing
  • Let you rap talk with whoever is at your front door

Oh, and when you press it, it rings too!

In short, these nifty smart devices are not just helpful and fun, but they can also dramatically increase your home’s [or apartment’s] security.

Interestingly, not all smart doorbells are created equal—some work flawlessly in executing the features described above. Some knockoffs are just plain junk. Regarding Ring vs August vs eufy, I can confidently recommend these three top video doorbell brands.

Editor’s Choice

ring video doorbell

At the end of the day, I like the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 because of its wide range of feaures, maturity, and satified customer base. There are also lots of support options both online and direct via Ring in case you run into any challenges.

However, all three options here provide great integration with Alexa and the features most people would want from a video doorbell.

I’ll break each product down in more detail below along what I see as the major pros and cons of each.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 Mini-Review

SEE IT AT AMAZON

There are not many smart home products I will give a glowing endorsement. But you will love the Ring Video doorbell. I have been using this since last year and love it. Customers who own this device love it and rave about it too.  This is one of the coolest devices that really delivers on the promise of smart home technology, in my option.

I bought this so I can catch the jerk who is stealing plants off my porch.Ring Video Doorbell Customer

Design and Features

The HD camera shoots at 1080 p, and it has a 160-degree viewing angle.  It also comes with four swappable faceplates [black, white, silver, gray] so you can change up the design to suit your home décor or mood. It includes motion alerts so you can fire up the app and see who is arriving at your doorstep.

I recently used it to communicate with an Instacart delivery girl, and I could tell she was just blown away [and maybe a little freaked out] to hear my voice coming out of the doorbell. LOL. Video footage can be played back right on your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet or Mac OS and Windows PCs. It will record the video that it captures.  As one would-be buyer said, “I bought this so I can catch the jerk who is stealing the plants off my porch.” All I can say to that is BUSTED.

The hardware is low voltage and requires a 16-24 VAC transformer (compatible with most doorbell setups).

Installation

Installation can be DIY, but I always recommend that you consult or hire a qualified electrician whenever you deal with wiring. That said, Ring has helpful installation videos if you are handy and want to go the DIY route yourself. Here are two installation videos from Ring on both generations of the doorbell:

Alexa & Google Compatibility

Here are some highlights of Amazon Echo integration with this Alexa-compatible doorbell:

  • Not compatible with Google Assistant.
  • Compatible with Echo Show 15, 10, 8, and 5.
  • Alexa commands include “Alexa, Show me my front door” and “Alexa, hide my front door.”
  • These commands are customizable.
  • You can also display the camera footage using Amazon Fire TV.

Alexa Commands

Here are some common Ring Video Doorbell Pro Alexa commands: Ask:

Alexa, show me the back door step.
  • “Alexa, show the front door.”
  • “Alexa, hide the front door.”
  • “Alexa, go Home.”
  • “Alexa, Stop.”
  • “Alexa, fast-forward 10 seconds.”
  • “Alexa, pause.”

Pros

  • Two-way audio means you can tell the pizza guy you need a minute to scrape up that spare change.
  • Sensitivity control lets you set it to detect people only or all activity like pets, drones, etc..
  • You can set motion zones for a wide field of view.
  • Works with Google Assistant and SmartThings in addition to Alexa.

Cons

  • 1080p resolution quality is less than other cameras here.
  • Sometimes struggles a bit with backlighting.
  • Ability to disable motion alerts temporarily; for example, if your kids are playing on your front porch.

August Doorbell Cam Pro Mini-Review

SEE IT AT AMAZON

As a runner-up to the Ring Doorbell Pro, the August Doorbell Cam Pro is a solid contender.

Design and Features

While I think this actually looks cooler than the Ring, the only real caveat is that it is a square 2.9 x 2.9 x 0.9 inch [7.4 x 7.4 x 2.3 cm] shape, which makes it too wide to fit on some door frames.

So, with that in mind, it does offer some benefits over the ring. It includes floodlight features that handle lighting better, and the video quality is better, too [960 x 1280 pixels]. This “non-standard” video size lets you view it on your phone in portrait mode without turning the phone on its side. Like the Ring doorbell, the wiring is low voltage, so this makes it compatible with most existing wiring setups.

The field of view is 120 degrees, giving you decent coverage of outside your door and the surrounding area. However, the field of view isn’t as wide as Ring or Eufy.

Installation

The August app includes a handy step-by-step installation guide with photos.

Kudos to 6 Months Later for the thoughtful video review.

Alexa & Google Compatibility

August Smart Lock Pro model featured here is compatible with Google Nest Hub.

According to Amazon, you can ” Use Alexa to control your August Smart Lock and show events from your August Doorbell Cam.

The following capabilities are supported:

  • lock/unlock your door* and check your lock’s status
  • view live video feeds and motion events captured by your August Doorbell Cam
  • hear announcements on your Echo device when someone rings your August Doorbell Cam
  • use routines to play sounds or control other smart devices following doorbell cam events
  • see and speak to visitors using your Echo Show or Echo Spot (coming soon)

Alexa Commands

Following are some common Alexa commands for the August Doorbell Cam Pro:

Alexa, ask August to show live doorbell video on Echo Show.
  • “Alexa, ask August to check the door.”
  • “Alexa, ask August to “Show Me the Front Door”
  • “Alexa, ask August to show live doorbell video on Echo Show.”
  • “Alexa, ask August for help.”
  • “Alexa, ask August what’s new.”

Pros

  • Looks cooler than other options here
  • Works with August smart locks to unlock the door and let visitors inside
  • Sensitivity is good and generally limited to people only [not a lot of false alarm]
  • Hindsight buffers a few seconds of video before the camera is

Cons

  • The square shape might make it difficult to install on narrow door frames
  • Field of view is narrow
  • No night vision; instead, relies on a floodlight
  • Free cloud storage is limited to prior 24 hours only, plans are paid for additional storage [although inexpensive this can add to the expense over time] – check Amazon for latest pricing
  • No activity zones [can’t customize capture area]
  • No compatibility with Google or Apple Homekit

Eufy Security Doorbell Mini Review

SEE IT AT AMAZON

Eufy makes one of my favorite robot vacuums and quickly becomes a force in the smart home space. Their value proposition is that they compete with larger brands on features and functionality, usually at a lower price. The Eufy Security video doorbell is no exception.

Design and Features

The biggest benefit of this doorbell over the other options is that the video quality is at a brilliant 2560 x 1920. This is full 2K video. It also has a 160-degree diagonal field of view, giving it more coverage than August and equal cover to Ring.

The demo of the video quality that I saw at Best Buy puts this ahead of the others here. The other benefit is that it is less expensive, and since there is no Cloud storage, you get more privacy, and there are no monthly fees. The ONLY reason I hesitate to put this in front of the others is the maturity factor.  Although, to be fair, this is highly rated, and customers who own it love it [especially the price].

Installation

Eufy has a great installation video out on YouTube. Again, I always like to recommend that you hire an electrician when dealing with any wiring, but as you can see below, this installation looks super easy for DIYers. I’ll embed the installation video below here for your reference.

Independent Video Review

LifeHackster provides a nice job in unboxing, installing, and reviewing the Eufy Security doorbell here—nice job with the video, man.

Alexa & Google Compatibility

Here are some highlights of Amazon Echo integration with this Alexa & Google-compatible doorbell:

  • Compatible with Amazon Echo Show 15, 10, 8, and 5.
  • Works with Google Assistant and Google Nest Hub
  • Commands include Alexa, Show me my front door and Alexa Hide my front door.
  • Commands are customizable.
  • You can also display the camera footage using FireTV.

Alexa Commands

Following are some common Alexa commands for the Eufy Video Doorbell:

Alexa, show me the Front Door.
  • “Alexa, show me the Side Door.”
  • “Alexa, go home.”
  • “Alexa, stop.”
  • “Alexa, show me the Front Door.”

Pros

  • Onboard storage means no monthly fees.
  • Beautiful 2560 x 1920 resolution [2K]
  • 160-degree field of view
  • Accurate Human detection with AI technology prevents false alarms.
  • Two-way talk
  • Thumbnail notification zooms in a person’s face.
  • IP 65 rated for weather means it hangs tough on heavy rain, freezing winters, or hot summers.
  • 3-second pre-buffer, like the August doorbell
  • Withstands temperatures ranging from -4°F (-20°C) to 122°F (50°C).
  • Night vision option

Cons

  • There are a few bugs that LifeHacksters points out in the video [see last few minutes of the video]
  • The electronic chime that comes with the device is required; can’t use existing chime.
  • Customers complain about issues prior to updating firmware.
  • App controls [buttons] are a bit small for my fat fingers.
  • 4MB memory inside of the camera is not removable or upgradeable.
  • Facial recognition during the day is a bit lacking in dark entryways.
  • Customers report false notifications if sensitivity higher than the middle setting.

For more details and a comprehensive comparison of these three top-notch doorbells, be sure to check out the full review on our blog.

What is the battery life of these smart doorbell cameras?

The battery life of these smart doorbell cameras can significantly vary based on the model and the frequency of use. The Ring Doorbell, a popular battery-powered model, boasts a rechargeable battery that typically lasts anywhere between 6-12 months before requiring a recharge. However, this can be shorter with heavy use or frequent activations.

On the other hand, the August Doorbell also comes with a rechargeable battery but lasts for approximately 3-6 months, depending on the frequency of use. The Eufy Video Doorbell Dual, a wired model, does not rely on battery power, instead requiring a continuous power connection to your home’s electrical system.
